Analysis of the genetic diversity in Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker) (Hemiptera, Aphididae) by RAPD markers Rev. Bras. entomol.
Lopes-da-Silva,Marcelo; Vieira,Luiz Gonzaga Esteves.
The emergence of host-races within aphids may constitute an obstacle to pest management by means of plant resistance. There are examples of host-races within cereals aphids, but their occurrence in Rose Grain Aphid, Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker, 1849), has not been reported yet. In this work, RAPD markers were used to assess effects of the hosts and geographic distance on the genetic diversity of M. dirhodum lineages. Twenty-three clones were collected on oats and wheat in twelve localitites of southern Brazil. From twenty-seven primers tested, only four primers showed polymorphisms. Fourteen different genotypes were revealed by cluster analysis. Five genotypes were collected only on wheat; seven only on oats and two were collected in both hosts. Genetic...

Characterization and genetic relationships among Brazilian biotypes of Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) using RAPD markers Neotropical Entomology
Lopes-da-Silva,Marcelo; Tonet,Gabriela E.L.; Vieira,Luiz G.E..
The greenbug Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) is one of the most important cereals pests in the world. Within populations of this species, several biotypes, which are clones that share same virulence relationships with cultivated plants, can be distinguished. Molecular markers have been used to genetically characterize insect populations because they are fast and cost effective. In order to find RAPD markers to identify Brazilian S. graminum biotypes, nineteen clonal populations of three biotypes (B, C and E) from Brazil and three clonal populations from the U.S. were examined. Eighteen primers were used to analyze the material, but only six primers revealed polymorphisms and among those, three produced diagnostic band profiles that allowed biotype...

Color polymorphism and allele frequency in a Brazilian population of the sunflower caterpillar Chlosyne lacinia saundersi (Doubleday) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) Neotropical Entomology
Lopes-da-Silva,Marcelo; Casagrande,Mirna M..
The aim of this work was at calculating allele frequency color polymorphism in a population of sunflower caterpillar, Chlosyne lacinia saundersi (Doubleday) from Londrina, Paraná State, Brazil. Allele frequency in insect populations can be used as genetic marker to compare populations from different geographical and host origins. There are three phenotypes conditioned by two loci interacting epistatically. The phenotypes are: rufa (oranged colored larvae), bicolor (black larvae with dorsal orange stripes) and nigra, larvae with the body entirely black, sometimes with dorsal yellow dots, best seen in the fourth and fifth instars. Samples were taken independently in an attempt to obtain all combinations of crossing among genotypes. The genetic mechanism of...

Infestation and natural parasitism of aphids in single and mixed pastures of black oats and ryegrass Rev. Bras. entomol.
Sturza,Vinícius Soares; Poncio,Sônia; Santos,Aline Bosak dos; Lopes-da-Silva,Marcelo.
Some species of aphids are major pests on cereal crops and grass pastures. Usually these pests are not adequately controlled in pasture lands that become sources of aphid infestations to cereal crops. The dynamics of aphids and the incidence of natural enemies are less known in pasture systems than in cereal fields. The objective of this work was to assess the aphid infestation and natural aphid parasitism in different pasture composition. Three hypotheses were tested: 1- the aphid species composition in pastures may vary according to the cereal species in the field; 2- the mixture of two plant species can modify the amount and diversity of aphids; 3- the plant species composition of pasture fields influences the parasitism of aphids. Empirical data were...

Potential spread and economic impact of invasive Drosophila suzukii in Brazil PAB
Benito,Norton Polo; Lopes-da-Silva,Marcelo; Santos,Régis Sivori Silva dos.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to outline the potential distribution and economic impact of Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae), a recent invasive pest, in Brazil. Two maps of the potential establishment of the species were drawn based on the ecoclimatic index (EI), which uses the following thermal requirements for the species: with thermal stress, most restrictive scenario for spread; and without thermal stress. The EI was classified into four ranges: unfavorable, ≤25%; less favorable, >25 to ≤50%; favorable, >50 to ≤75%; and highly favorable, >75%. Economic losses were estimated based on the most restrictive map. The highly favorable areas were overlapped with those of the maps of production data for each possible host (apple,...

Temporal genotypic diversity of Schizaphis graminum (Rondani 1852) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in a black oats (Avena strigosa) field BABT
Lopes-da-Silva,Marcelo; Vieira,Luiz Gonzaga Esteves.
The aim of this work was to analyze the clonal diversity variation in Schizaphis graminum during a complete phenological cycle of black oats (Avena strigosa). RAPD markers were used for detection of DNA polymorphisms of each clonal lineage, derived from a single clone collected weekly during a period of four months, in a crop field of black oats, Londrina, Paraná, Brazil. The monthly genotypic diversity was estimated by Shannon Information Index (H). Only four genotypes were distinguished from 122 specimens, with one of them overly predominant in all sampling dates (>60%). Another genotype, apparently a later colonizer, rapidly reached greater frequency than other genotypes on the second and third month. The results of this work suggested that temporal...
